THE MARTIN FAMILY GENEALOGY




PETER MARTIN (PIETER MAAT)

Peter immigrated to the United States with his wife and children. He arrived in New York on the ASA CHARLES on 12 February 1861. The ship’s log records the following information about the family: Peter was 30 years old, and a farmer. His wife’s name was Jakomyintje, 33 years old and a housewife. Their children were Jan 18 years old, Cornelia 16 years old, Leedert 12 years old, and Elbert 6 years old. They were from Drenth, Holland and were listed as second class passengers. They settled in Paterson, NJ. On the death certificate of their son John (Jan) many years after their arrival, PIETER was listed as Albert, and Jakomyinitje was listed as Cornelia Van Hine.

JOHN MARTIN (JAN MAAT)

At some point after his arrival in America, he changed his name to John Martin. He was born 7 October 1840 in Drenth, Holland and married Cornelia Keivett (also born in Holland) on 28 December 1863 in either Paterson or Passaic, NJ. He died 3 April 1924 in Passaic, NJ.

Their children were: Kate, who married Mathew Geene, Minnie who married William Nicoll, Albert, Nellie, Claudia “Clara” who was born 4 August 1879, married William H. Dunn in 22 March 1899 in Paterson, NJ, she died 28 February 1971 in Paterson, NJ, Peter who died as a young man in a construction accident in New York City, and John Jr.
